WCSC 2009 Review

It's been a very mixed 12 months for the Wellington CSC. We started the year fully expecting Celtic to go on and win its fourth consecutive SPL title but as we know, we threw it away. As the season reached its climax, and having watched as the team twice blew 7 point leads, we believed we could still do it, but strange team selections and inept performances saw Celtic fail to score a single goal in its last 3 games, effectively gifting the title to Rangers. Thankfully manager Gordon Strachan had the decency to fall on his sword and 4 years of turgid pish was over... or so we thought.

Club membership had remained at around the same level as our previous 2 years but there was a noticeable drop-off in members and visitors turning up for games, particularly, and surprisingly, for the OF matches. On the plus side, the quality of picture we were getting became much better since we changed our broadband provider, though it didn't do much to improve the sound quality as the Ch67 crew continued to report from their lead-lined container.

Some welcome respite from the loss of the league came when it was announced that new manager Tony Mowbray would be bringing Celtic down under in the close season to play a friendly against the Queensland Roar in Brisbane in July. About 8 WCSC members made the trip over for what turned out to be a memorable 3/4/5 day binge (depending who you were hanging out with!). Celtic winning was an added bonus.
